Robertson's Word Pictures (NT)
Were going (hrxonto). Picturesque imperfect.
It was now dark (skotia hdh egegonei). Past perfect active of ginomai. While they were going, "darkness had already come."
And Jesus had not yet come to them (kai ouk elhluqei prov autouv o Ihsouv). Another past perfect active of erxomai with negative oupw. Darkness had come, but Jesus had not come, while they were going over the sea. The tenses in these verses are very graphic.
Other Robertson's Word Pictures (NT) entries containing John 6:17:
Mark 6:47
John 1:5
John 6:16
John 20:1
John 21:8
