John 8:5
Compare all
3 Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst,
4 they said to Him, “Teacher,1 this woman was caught in aadultery, in the very act.
5 aNow Moses, in the law, commanded us2 that such should be stoned. But what do You3 say?”
6 This they said, testing Him, that they amight have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger,1 as though He did not hear.
7 So when they continued asking Him, He1 raised Himself up and said to them, a“He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”
8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 Then those who heard it, abeing convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
10 When Jesus had raised Himself up1 and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers2 of yours? Has no one condemned you?”
11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, a“Neither do I condemn you; go and bsin no more.”
12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, a“I am the light of the world. He who bfollows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Jesus Defends His Self-Witness

13 The Pharisees therefore said to Him, a“You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not1 true.”
14 Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but ayou do not know where I come from and where I am going.
15 aYou judge according to the flesh; bI judge no one.
16 And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for aI am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.

John 8:4-5

woman . . . in adultery . . . Moses . . . commanded . . . should be stoned—simply put to death (Deuteronomy 22:22), but in aggravated cases, at least in later times, this was probably by stoning (Ezekiel 16:40).

but what sayest thou—hoping, whatever He might answer, to put Him in the wrong:—if He said, Stone her, that would seem a stepping out of His province; if He forbade it, that would hold Him up as a relaxer of the public morals. But these cunning hypocrites were overmatched.

John 8:3-6

scribes and Pharisees—foiled in their yesterday's attempt, and hoping to succeed better in this.
