Robertson's Word Pictures (NT)
They perceived not (ouk egnwsan). Second aorist active indicative of ginwskw. "Preoccupied as they were with thoughts of an earthly deliverer" (Westcott) and prejudiced against recognizing Jesus as the one sent from God.
That he spake to them of the Father (oti ton patera autoiv elegen). Indirect assertion, but with the present indicative (legei) changed to the imperfect (elegen) as was sometimes done (John 2:25) after a secondary tense.
