Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

1 Now abefore the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that bHis hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He cloved them to the end.  
2 And1 supper being ended, athe devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him,  
3 Jesus, knowing athat the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He bhad come from God and cwas going to God,  
4 arose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.  
5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, a“Lord, are You washing my feet?”  
7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you ado not understand now, bbut you will know after this.”  
8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, a“If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”  
9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and ayou are clean, but not all of you.”  
11 For aHe knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”  
12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you1 know what I have done to you?  
13 aYou call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.  
14 aIf I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, byou also ought to wash one another’s feet.  
15 For aI have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.  
16 aMost assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.  
17 aIf you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.  

Jesus Identifies His Betrayer

18 “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the aScripture may be fulfilled, b‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’  
19 aNow I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He.

John 13:1

The feast of the passover - See the notes at Matthew 26:2, Matthew 26:17.

His hour was come - The hour appointed in the purpose of God for him to die, John 12:27.

Having loved his own - Having given to them decisive and constant proofs of his love. This was done by his calling them to follow him; by patiently teaching them; by bearing with their errors and weaknesses; and by making them the heralds of his truth and the heirs of eternal life.

He loved them unto the end - That is, he continued the proofs of his love until he was taken away from them by death. Instances of that love John proceeds immediately to record in his washing their feet and in the institution of the Lord' s Supper. We may remark that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He does not change; he always loves the same traits of character; nor does he withdraw his love from the soul. If his people walk in darkness and wander from him, the fault is theirs, not his. His is the character of a friend that never leaves or forsakes us; a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. Psalms 37:28; "the Lord ...forsaketh not his saints." Isaiah 49:14-17; Proverbs 18:24.
