Robertson's Word Pictures (NT)
They had not had sin (amartian ouk eixosan). Conclusion of condition of second class without an because context makes it clear (nun de) without it (Robertson, Grammar, p. 1013). The imperfect active indicative with -osan instead of -on (also in verse John 15:24) as common in the LXX, and occurs in the papyri and the inscriptions and the Boeotian dialect.
Excuse (profasin). Old word (I Thessalonians 2:5) either from profainw, to show forth, or profhmi, to speak forth. Mere pretence, in John only here and verse John 15:24.
Other Robertson's Word Pictures (NT) entries containing John 15:22:
John 9:41
John 18:36
John 19:11
Romans 3:13
1 John 1:8
