John 17:17
Excerpted from: Faith (Part Three)Let us consider God's Word for just a bit because this is the basis of our reasoning. This is where the evidence is contained by which faith comes. In John 17:17 Jesus said that God's Word is truth. Truth there indeed does mean factual; something that is right and good. But we need to understand it in a little bit different way, and so what I am going to give here is a number of contrasts because this word that is translated "truth" is also equally well translated into the English word "real" or "reality." God's Word is reality. Another English word is the word "genuine"—God's word is genuine.
Let us make a few contrasts here. God's Word then is factual as contrasted to flawed. Man's word is flawed; some of it is true, some of it is not true. Man's word is corrupted by the fact that even though he may have good intentions, even though there is sincerity in terms of wanting to tell the truth, his experience just does not support his ability to really give us truth. God sees all things, He hears all things, He knows all things. He is Omnipotent, He is Omnipresent, He is Eternal, there is no beginning of days or end of life, He is the sum total of everything, and if He tells us something it has the weight of everything that He is behind it. So His Word is not flawed because it is impossible for God to lie. So God's Word is factual as contrasted to the word of man which is flawed.
In addition to that, God's Word is pure as contrasted to that which is contaminated. God's Word is genuine as contrasted to that which is hypocritical. The word of man may look good on the outside, but it is not all that good. God's Word is reality as contrasted to that which is fantasy or vanity. It is good to understand this because if we are going to use the Word of God in the right way, we have to believe it. We not only have to believe it, we have to trust it. When Jesus said that God's Word is truth and that we are sanctified by that word, we have to understand it from the point of view, or the perspective of God, that God's Word is pure, God's Word is genuine, God's Word is factual, God's Word is reality, and all those things are contrasted to man's word. Even though he has the best of intentions and sincerity, he cannot even begin to come close to the Word of God. Whose word are we going to use as evidence upon which to base our life if we are going to live by faith, live by trust?

Excerpted from: Freedom and Unleavened BreadI think we are generally familiar with the word "truth." This is the same word that appears in John 17:17, where it says, "Thy word is truth." This word is used in a number of ways in the New Testament. It can mean genuine. It can mean real or reality, as opposed to mere appearance.
In John 17:17, it is used in the sense of something derived from a pure and holy God and declaring the will of that God as compared to that which is from the world, which is the course sullied by the experiences of men.

Excerpted from: Government (Part Three)We begin to see, in verse 14, what produces this dichotomy. "I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them"—a separation begins to occur—"because they are not of the world."
So, here we find ourselves in the world, but not of it. This was produced because we have heard the gospel and responded to it. This has produced a separation from conformity to the world; and, if continued in a person's life, it will also produce a separation from the evil of this world.

Your word is truth,"—we ought to be able to see that it is not enough just to assent that something is true, but rather it must be continued in. That is what the word "abide" means. It means to "live in," "continue in," "be a part of." The thought, the idea is of "making use of."
