Compare all

Stephen the Martyr

54 aWhen they heard these things they were1 cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.
55 But he, abeing full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the bglory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
56 and said, “Look! aI see the heavens opened and the bSon of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord;
58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And athe witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.

Acts 7:56

I see . . . the Son of man standing, etc.—This is the only time that our Lord is by human lips called THE SON OF MAN after His ascension (Revelation 1:13; Revelation 14:14 are not instances). And why here? Stephen, full of the Holy Ghost, speaking now not of himself at all (Acts 7:55), but entirely by the Spirit, is led to repeat the very words in which Jesus Himself, before this same council, had foretold His glorification (Matthew 26:64), assuring them that that exaltation of the SON OF MAN which they should hereafter witness to their dismay, was already begun and actual [ALFORD].

Acts 7:54-56

When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, etc.—If they could have answered him, how different would have been their temper of mind!
