American Standard Version
Wherefore? Because `they sought it' not by faith, but as it were by works. They stumbled at the stone of stumbling;

Amplified® Bible
For what reason? Because [they pursued it] not through faith, relying [instead] on the merit of their works [they did not depend on faith but on what they could do]. They have stumbled over the Stumbling Stone.

Contemporary English Version

Darby English Version
Wherefore? Because [it was] not on the principle of faith, but as of works. They have stumbled at the stumblingstone,

Good News Bible
And why not? Because they did not depend on faith but on what they did. And so they stumbled over the "stumbling stone"

International Standard Version
Why not? Because they did not pursue it on the basis of faith, but as if it were based on works. They stumbled over the stone that causes people to stumble.

King James Version
Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
