Romans 10:4
Compare all
2 For I bear them witness athat they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
3 For they being ignorant of aGod’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own brighteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.
4 For aChrist is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
5 For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, a“The man who does those things shall live by them.”
6 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, a“Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down from above)
7 or, a“ ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).
8 But what does it say? a“The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach):
9 that aif you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the Scripture says, a“Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
12 For athere is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for bthe same Lord over all cis rich to all who call upon Him.
13 For a“whoever calls bon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Israel Rejects the Gospel

14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear awithout a preacher?
15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:
a“How beautiful are the feet of those who1 preach the gospel of peace,
Who bring glad tidings of good things!”

What Does Romans 10:4 Mean?

"End" here does not mean conclusion or that the law is done away; if it were, sin could not exist, since "by the law is the knowledge of sin" (Romans 3:20). Rather, "end" means goal or purpose, naming Christ as the object of the Bible. The law, one aspect representing the whole plan of salvation, broadly describes God's righteousness and aims toward Him; He is its target. Jesus is what the law produces, personifying its intent, having perfectly exemplified God's desires (Matthew 5:17). He embodies perfect love and government, the Standard toward which men strive. Better renderings call Him the "culmination" of the law, or "the goal at which the Torah aims." All God's instructions, including sacrifices and holy days, point to the Messiah.

Romans 10:4

Paul says that Christ is the object of the Bible. The law, as one aspect that represents the whole plan of salvation, is the instrument that broadly describes God's righteousness. Like everything in God's purpose, the end—the goal—of the law is to bring us "to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ" (Ephesians 4:13).

Jesus fulfilled the law in that He perfectly exemplified God's desires in everything He did (see Matthew 5:17). He personifies perfect love and government. He is the perfect man yet also God in the flesh. He is the Standard toward which men are to strive.

Romans 10:4

Here, end does not mean "conclusion" as in "done away." If the law was done away, sin could not exist because Paul states, "By the law is the knowledge of sin" (Romans 3:20). Rather, end should be "goal" or "purpose," meaning that this verse names Christ as the object of the Bible (see Romans 6:22; I Timothy 1:5; James 5:11; I Peter 1:9). The law—indeed, the whole Bible—is aimed toward Him; He is its target. Paul is saying Jesus is what the law produces; He personifies its intent.
