12 aAll things are lawful for me, but all things are not1 helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of2 any.  
13 aFoods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for bsexual immorality but cfor the Lord, dand the Lord for the body.  
14 And aGod both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up bby His power.  
15 Do you not know that ayour bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not!  
16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For a“the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.”  
17 aBut he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.  
18 aFlee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins bagainst his own body.  
19 Or ado you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, band you are not your own?  
20 For ayou were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body1 and in your spirit, which are God’s.

1 Corinthians 6:13

But God shall bring to nought both it and them (o de qeov kai tauthn kai tauta katarghsei). Another proverb about the adaptation of the belly (koilia) and food (brwmata, not just flesh), which had apparently been used by some in Corinth to justify sexual license (fornication and adultery). These Gentiles mixed up matters not alike at all (questions of food and sensuality). " We have traces of this gross moral confusion in the circumstances which dictated the Apostolic Letter (Acts 15:23-29), where things wholly diverse are combined, as directions about meats to be avoided and a prohibition of fornication" (Lightfoot). Both the belly (tauthn) and the foods (tauta) God will bring to an end by death and change.

But the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body (to de swma ou th porneiai alla tw kuriw, kai o kuriov tw swmati). Paul here boldly shows the fallacy in the parallel about appetite of the belly for food. The human body has a higher mission than the mere gratification of sensual appetite. Sex is of God for the propagation of the race, not for prostitution. Paul had already stated that God dwells in us as the sanctuary of the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 3:16 f.). This higher function of the body he here puts forward against the debased Greek philosophy of the time which ignored completely Paul's idea, "the body for the Lord and the Lord for the body" (dative of personal interest in both cases). "The Lord Jesus and porneia contested for the bodies of Christian men; loyal to him they must renounce that, yielding to that they renounce him" (Findlay).
