1 Corinthians 10:6

Compare all

4 and all drank the same ^aspiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.

5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies ^awere scattered in the wilderness.

6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as ^athey also lusted.

7 ^aAnd do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, ^b“The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”

8 ^aNor let us commit sexual immorality, as ^bsome of them did, and ^cin one day twenty-three thousand fell;

9 nor let us¹ tempt Christ, as ^asome of them also tempted, and ^bwere destroyed by serpents;

10 nor complain, as ^asome of them also complained, and ^bwere destroyed by ^cthe destroyer.

If we look at Israel's sins back in I Corinthians 10 and reflect on the story that unfolds, Paul is just reflecting on the occurrences in this case and reporting them. He tells us that there are lessons there. If we would go back and look at it in Numbers and Exodus, we would find impatience, pride, fear involved in these things.

Five major sins of the Israelite people are listed here. We are going to find as we go through this that there was really, in one sense, only one major sin. But the others led to this major sin. That major sin was idolatry. The other sins they committed were just a step that took them into idolatry.
