"Common to man" means that the trials that come to Christians are the same as come to all men. Now as we live life we find that (in most cases) these trials are unavoidable. They just happen. It is happening in the world, we are part of what is going on in the world and so those things affect us and they are unavoidable. God says that He will provide "a way of escape." I should not use the general article "a." It says in my Bible "the way of escape". There is one right way out of each trial that comes. There may be other optional ways, but what Paul is saying is that there is "a way" or "the way." Now we want "the way"—the one that God provides for man. And the imagery, given here, is that of an army trapped during a battle, but suddenly a mountain pass opens up before them to provide them a way out of their dilemma. Now that is what the apostle Paul uses to illustrate how Christians escape the trial.

Again we want to emphasize here that the Christian is going through it as well. There is a reason for that. The trial God provides is good for the Christian to go through. He wants to see what our reaction is going to be to it. Are we going to avail ourselves of "a way of escape" that might be provided by ourselves or by the world, or are we going to submit to "the way of escape" He will make available to us? You can be sure that "the way of escape" is always going to involve the use of faith. God is testing our response to His declarations, His promises of faithfulness (that is God's faithfulness), and He wants to see whether or not we are going to respond because God is faithful. Which way will we go?

You can even find, at the beginning of the book, that God taunted Satan in saying, "Have you considered My servant, Job?" It is like God egged him into it. Now why would God do such a thing if He did not trust Job—that his faith, his love, his loyalty to God was so strong that even Satan directly confronting him could not break him down? So, God's trust of Job was vindicated. He had seen Job act over a long enough period of time that He was confident that Job would be able to endure a direct confrontation from Satan the Devil—the master deceiver, the master tempter, who is able even to strike a person with horrible diseases.

Does not God say, back in I Corinthians 10:13, that "no temptation has overtaken you except such is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it"? God does not want to lose us. Yet God is creating in us His holy, righteous character. In order for that to be done, He has to put us through tests. And He has to, in a sense, take the risk that He will not lose us in that test. And so He will let the leash out, little by little, and maybe increase the intensity of the tests as years go by and we experience life together with Him.

They could see his face, but they also saw God. Now from where did this powerful conviction come? Brethren, that kind of conviction does not arise on command, at the spur of the moment. That kind of conviction was the fruit of the demonstration of God in the lives of these three young men previous to this time and when their lives were on the line. They grew in faith over a period of time.

God is the God who is always the same. I Corinthians 10:13 applied to them just as it applies to you and me. He knew what they were able to endure. And they knew that He would provide a way of escape. So they said, Even if He does not choose to do that, we still are not going to bow down to your image.

Brethren, why do not more mighty deliverances occur to us? I think it is because we spend so little time fellowshipping with God that we do not see Him as an immediate and vitally important part of our lives. As a result of that, we are overwhelmed by the physical, by the around and the about.

I bring this up because we all have failings of faith and I do not want us to feel overly bad about this because God supplies the need in some way. He does not dump us, but He supplies another way. It is experiences like this that the concept that is given in I Corinthians 10:13 where he says that God will make a way of escape that you may be able to bear it, overcome it, endure it, or whatever. In this case, the way was provided by Aaron, who apparently was not afraid to speak. Maybe he was a far better speaker even naturally than Moses was at his best. I do not know.

This verse is a key. It is a key to help us to understand that God always supplies enough for us to carry out our part in His creative work. Not just in the tribulation, but also in every day decisions of everyday life. I don't know if you understand it, but this is one of the major themes of the Feast of Tabernacles. Regardless of where we are in the pilgrim journey, He supplies the need. God is faithful.

He is willing to give you whatever it takes to win that confrontation, to win against that temptation—to provide you a way of faithful escape from that temptation for you to bear it and overcome it. We just need to believe Him that He will provide us when we ask. And we should believe it. We have the promise from our general, Jesus Christ, that He will do this.

There is no need for us to fail. The trials and tests will come. And they are common tests. They are not something that is so unusual that we are absolutely unique. But God is faithful in that He promises that He will provide us a way out of it—not avoiding it, but out through it.
