2 Corinthians 11:25
Compare all
23 Are they ministers of Christ?—I speak as a fool—I am more: ain labors more abundant, bin stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, cin deaths often.
24 From the Jews five times I received aforty bstripes minus one.
25 Three times I was abeaten with rods; bonce I was stoned; three times I cwas shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep;
26 in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, ain perils of my own countrymen, bin perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;
27 in weariness and toil, ain sleeplessness often, bin hunger and thirst, in cfastings often, in cold and nakedness—
28 besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: amy deep concern for all the churches.
29 aWho is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation?
30 If I must boast, aI will boast in the things which concern my1 infirmity.
31 aThe God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, bwho is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying.
32 aIn Damascus the governor, under Aretas the king, was guarding the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desiring to arrest me;
33 but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped from his hands.

2 Corinthians 11:25

Thrice was I beaten with rods (triv errabdisqhn). Roman (Gentile) punishment. It was forbidden to Roman citizens by the Lex Porcia, but Paul endured it in Philippi (Acts 16:23, Acts 16:37), the only one of the three named in Acts. First aorist passive of rabdizw, from rabdov, rod, Koin‚ word, in N.T. only here and Acts 16:22 which see.

Once was I stoned (apac eliqasqhn). Once for all apac means. At Lystra (Acts 14:5-19). On liqazw Koin‚ verb from liqov, see on Acts 5:26.

Thrice I suffered shipwreck (triv enauaghsa). First aorist active of nauagew, from nauagov, shipwrecked (nauv, ship, agnumi, to break). Old and common verb, in N.T. only here and I Timothy 1:19. We know nothing of these. The one told in Acts 27 was much later. What a pity that we have no data for all these varied experiences of Paul.

Night and day (nuxqhmeron) Rare word. Papyri give nukthmar with the same idea (night-day).

Have I been in the deep (en tw buqw pepoihka). Vivid dramatic perfect active indicative of poiew, "I have done a night and day in the deep." The memory of it survives like a nightmare. Buqov is old word (only here in N.T.) for bottom, depth of the sea, then the sea itself. Paul does not mean that he was a night and day under the water, not a Jonah experience, only that he was far out at sea and shipwrecked. This was one of the three shipwrecks-already named.
