Galatians 2:1

Defending the Gospel

1 Then after fourteen years aI went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and also took Titus with me.
2 And I went up1 by revelation, and communicated to them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but aprivately to those who were of reputation, lest by any means bI might run, or had run, in vain.
3 Yet not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.
4 And this occurred because of afalse brethren secretly brought in (who came in by stealth to spy out our bliberty which we have in Christ Jesus, cthat they might bring us into bondage),
5 to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour, that athe truth of the gospel might continue with you.
6 But from those awho seemed to be something—whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; bGod shows personal favoritism to no man—for those who seemed to be something cadded nothing to me.
7 But on the contrary, awhen they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised bhad been committed to me, as the gospel for the circumcised was to Peter
8 (for He who worked effectively in Peter for the apostleship to the acircumcised balso cworked effectively in me toward the Gentiles),
9 and when James,1 Cephas, and John, who seemed to be apillars, perceived bthe grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, cthat we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.
10 They desired only that we should remember the poor, athe very thing which I also was eager to do.

No Return to the Law

11 aNow when1 Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed;
12 for before certain men came from James, ahe would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing1 those who were of the circumcision.
13 And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.
14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about athe truth of the gospel, I said to Peter bbefore them all, c“If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews,1 why do you compel Gentiles to live as2 Jews?
15 aWe who are Jews by nature, and not bsinners of the Gentiles,
16 aknowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but bby faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not cby the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

Galatians 2:1

HIS CO-ORDINATE AUTHORITY AS APOSTLE OF THE CIRCUMCISION RECOGNIZED BY THE APOSTLES. PROVED BY HIS REBUKING PETER FOR TEMPORIZING AT ANTIOCH: HIS REASONING AS TO THE INCONSISTENCY OF JUDAIZING WITH JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH. (Gal. 2:1-21)

Translate, "After fourteen years"; namely, from Paul's conversion inclusive [ALFORD]. In the fourteenth year from his conversion [BIRKS]. The same visit to Jerusalem as in Acts 15:1-4 (A.D. 50), when the council of the apostles and Church decided that Gentile Christians need not be circumcised. His omitting allusion to that decree is; (1) Because his design here is to show the Galatians his own independent apostolic authority, whence he was not likely to support himself by their decision. Thus we see that general councils are not above apostles. (2) Because he argues the point upon principle, not authoritative decisions. (3) The decree did not go the length of the position maintained here: the council did not impose Mosaic ordinances; the apostle maintains that the Mosaic institution itself is at an end. (4) The Galatians were Judaizing, not because the Jewish law was imposed by authority of the Church as necessary to Christianity, but because they thought it necessary to be observed by those who aspired to higher perfection (Galatians 3:3; Galatians 4:21). The decree would not at all disprove their view, and therefore would have been useless to quote. Paul meets them by a far more direct confutation, "Christ is of no effect unto you whosoever are justified by the law" (Galatians 5:4), [PALEY].

Titus . . . also—specified on account of what follows as to him, in Galatians 2:3. Paul and Barnabas, and others, were deputed by the Church of Antioch (Acts 15:2) to consult the apostles and elders at Jerusalem on the question of circumcision of Gentile Christians.
