Galatians 2:17-21
Excerpted from: Grace Upon GraceAnd we are. We just read that in Romans 3, that there are none righteous, no not one. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
If you remember the sermon on the "Justice of God," it showed that justification is clearly an act of God's grace, because what we deserve from what we have earned—that is, what we have done, the conduct of our lives, is death. There is none righteous, no not one. Since justification then cannot be claimed as a right because we have sinned, it must be received as a gift. It is its given-ness that makes it an act of grace.
Let me rephrase that and put it into a simple illustration. It is not our hanging on to Christ—that is, the keeping of the law—that saves us, but rather Christ hanging on to us. That is, it is not what we do, but it is what He does continuously as acts of grace, because we deserve death. If we can earn salvation through law keeping, Paul is saying in verse 21—let me read this again, "I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain." If we can earn salvation through law keeping, then Christ's sinless life and agonizing death were not necessary, because we can do it ourselves.

Excerpted from: Are You Strong in the Lord?So Paul shows both sides of this principle to reveal who is working. He uses this method of writing to make us think about these things and to save us from the spirit of error. He says, I have been crucified with Christ. What does that mean? When Paul says it is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me, it does not mean that Paul ceased doing things. He did not just hand it all over to Christ, he finished his life of struggle and work.
Paul continues, "in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." So we live this life regarding our faith in God because of what They have done for us and what They will do. So Paul shows that our relationship with God requires us and Christ to be involved. If we say we must do it all ourselves, we are wrong. Or if we say we do nothing and He does everything, we are equally wrong. And granted, all credit for our justification and sanctification and salvation goes to the Father and Christ. We live in the flesh and Christ lives in us, enabling us to live God's way of life in the flesh.

There is a sense in which the Christian's whole life is in the Husband, and yet the Christian has not become completely lost. He is still here, as Paul says, The life I now live, I live in the flesh.
Though there is a great mystery concerning the marriage relationship, and we must never forget that this great name of Jesus Christ is upon us. What matters, and should matter to all of us, is that our names have been changed. Here in the realm of the church, other names do not matter. What matters now is that the name of Christ is on us.
So we are united here, and we are all together in Him. He has taken us to Himself, His church, His bride. Notice again what Christ says to the Philadelphians and to the rest of the church.

That is why it takes faith to be baptized. We cannot, of and by ourselves, go God's way. But with His Spirit helping, guiding and leading us, and with Jesus Christ actually living His life over in us, God promises that we can make it.
It takes faith to be confident that God will complete what He has started in us.
What must be the source of our salvation? We have to totally, faithfully rely on God. God does not expect us to make it into His Kingdom, or even spiritually survive this present life, based on our own works. Our own works will not save us.

You could call this maybe Paul's commentary or restatement of the same ideas, including what Jesus said essentially to Nicodemus about being born again. He was born again and accepted the sacrifice of Christ and now in baptism, he had died, he was crucified with Christ, and now he lives the life of Christ because when he came up, he lives now because of Christ living in him.
