Ephesians 2:3
Compare all

By Grace Through Faith

1 And ayou He made alive, bwho were dead in trespasses and sins,
2 ain which you once walked according to the1 course of this world, according to bthe prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in cthe sons of disobedience,
3 aamong whom also we all once conducted ourselves in bthe lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and cwere by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
4 But God, awho is rich in mercy, because of His bgreat love with which He loved us,
5 aeven when we were dead in trespasses, bmade us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together ain the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in aHis kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
8 aFor by grace you have been saved bthrough faith, and that not of yourselves; cit is the gift of God,

Ephesians 2:3

We also all (kai hmeiv pantev). We Jews.

Once lived (anestrafhmen pote). Second aorist passive indicative of anastrefw, old verb, to turn back and forth, to live (II Corinthians 1:12). Cf. pote periepathsate, of the Gentiles in verse Ephesians 2:2.

The desires (ta qelhmata). Late and rare word except in LXX and N.T., from qelw, to will, to wish. Plural here "the wishes," "the wills" of the flesh like taiv epiqumiaiv thv sarkov just before. Gentiles had no monopoly of such sinful impulses.

Of the mind (twn dianoiwn). Plural again, "of the thoughts or purposes."

Were by nature children of wrath (hmeqa tekna fusei orghv). This is the proper order of these words which have been the occasion of much controversy. There is no article with tekna. Paul is insisting that Jews as well as Gentiles ("even as the rest") are the objects of God's wrath (orghv) because of their lives of sin. See Rom. 2:1-3:20 for the full discussion of this to Jews unpalatable truth. The use of fusei (associative instrumental case of manner) is but the application of Paul's use of "all" (pantev) as shown also in Romans 3:20; Romans 5:12. See fusei of Gentiles in Romans 2:14. The implication of original sin is here, but not in the form that God's wrath rests upon little children before they have committed acts of sin. The salvation of children dying before the age of responsibility is clearly involved in Romans 5:13 f.
