Robertson's Word Pictures (NT)
I thank (xarin exw). "I have gratitude." As in I Timothy 1:12. Robinson cites examples of this phrase from the papyri. It occurs also in Luke 17:9; Acts 2:47. Xariv in doxologies Paul uses (I Corinthians 15:57; I Corinthians 2:14; 8:16; I Corinthians 9:15; Romans 6:17; Romans 7:25). His usual idiom is euxaristw (I Corinthians 1:4; Romans 1:8; Philemon 1:4; Philippians 1:3) or euxaristoumen (I Thessalonians 1:2; Colossians 1:3) or ou pauomai euxaristwn (Ephesians 1:16) or euxaristein ofeilomen (II Thessalonians 1:3).
Whom I serve from my forefathers (w latreuw apo progonwn). The relative w is the dative case with latreuw (see Romans 1:9 for this verb), progressive present (I have been serving). For progonwn (forefathers) see I Timothy 5:4. Paul claims a pious ancestry as in Acts 24:14; Acts 26:5; Galatians 2:14; Philippians 3:4-7.
In a pure conscience (en kaqarai suneidhsei). See I Timothy 1:5; Acts 23:1.
Unceasing (adialeipton). Late and rare compound, in N.T. only here and Romans 9:2 which see. The adverb adialeiptwv is more frequent (in the papyri, literary Koin‚, I Thessalonians 1:2; Romans 1:9). The adjective here is the predicate accusative, "how I hold the memory concerning thee unceasing." The use of adialeiptwv (adverb) is a sort of epistolary formula (papyri, I Thessalonians 1:2; I Thessalonians 2:13; I Thessalonians 5:17; Romans 1:9).
Remembrance (mneian). Old word, in N.T. only Pauline (seven times, I Thessalonians 1:2; Romans 1:9; Philippians 1:3).
