Hebrews 3:7
Compare all
5 aAnd Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as ba servant, cfor a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward,
6 but Christ as aa Son over His own house, bwhose house we are cif we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope1 firm to the end.

Be Faithful

7 Therefore, as athe Holy Spirit says:
b“Today, if you will hear His voice,
8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
In the day of trial in the wilderness,
9 Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me,
And saw My works forty years.
10 Therefore I was angry with that generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they have not known My ways.’
11 So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”
12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;
13 but1 exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end,
15 while it is said:
a“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

Failure of the Wilderness Wanderers

16 aFor who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses?
17 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, awhose corpses fell in the wilderness?

Hebrews 3:7

Wherefore (dio). Probably this inferential conjunction (dia, o, because of which) goes with mh sklhrunhte (harden not) in verse Hebrews 3:8 rather than with blepete (take heed) in verse Hebrews 3:12 unless the long quotation be considered a parenthesis. The long quotation in verses Hebrews 3:7-11 is from Psalms 95:7-11. After the quotation the author has "three movements" (Moffatt) in his discussion of the passage as applied to the Jewish Christians (Hebrews 3:12-19; Hebrews 4:1-13). The peril of apostasy as shown by the example of the Israelites is presented with vividness and power.

As the Holy Ghost saith (kaqwv legei to pneuma to agion). Just this phrase nowhere else in the N.T., except Acts 21:11 (Agabus), though practically the same idea in Hebrews 9:8; Hebrews 10:15. In I Timothy 4:1 the adjective "Holy" is wanting as in Revelation 2 and 3. But the writer quotes this Psalm as the Word of God and in Hebrews 4:7 attributes it to David.

If ye shall hear (ean akoushte). Condition of third class with ean and first aorist active subjunctive of akouw.
