Hebrews 4:5
Compare all
3 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:
a“So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: a“And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”;
5 and again in this place: a“They shall not enter My rest.”
6 Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience,
7 again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:
a“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”
8 For if1 Joshua had agiven them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day.
9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.

Hebrews 4:5

And in this place again - Psalms 95:11.

If they shall enter - That is, they shall not enter; see the notes at Hebrews 3:11. The object of quoting this here seems to be two-fold:

(1)To show that even in this Psalm God spoke of "his" rest, and said that they should not enter into it; and,

(2)It is connected with Hebrews 4:6, and is designed to show that it was implied that a rest yet remained. "That which deserves to be called "the divine rest" is spoken of in the Scriptures, and as "they" did not enter into it, it follows that it must be in reserve for some others, and that the promise must still remain."
