Hebrews 7:16

14 For it is evident that aour Lord arose from bJudah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning1 priesthood.  
15 And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest
16 who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life.
17 For1 He testifies:
a“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”  
18 For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of aits weakness and unprofitableness,  
19 for athe law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of ba better hope, through which cwe draw near to God.  

Greatness of the New Priest

20 And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath
21 (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him:
a“The Lord has sworn
And will not relent,
‘You are a priest1 forever
According to the order of Melchizedek’ ”),  
22 by so much more Jesus has become a1 surety of a abetter covenant.  
23 Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing.

Hebrews 7:16

carnal . . . endless—mutually contrasted. As "form" and "power" are opposed, II Timothy 3:5; so here "the law" and "power," compare Romans 8:3, "The law was weak through the flesh"; and Hebrews 7:18, "weakness." "The law" is here not the law in general, but the statute as to the priesthood. "Carnal," as being only outward and temporary, is contrasted with "endless," or, as Greek, "indissoluble." Commandments is contrasted with "life." The law can give a commandment, but it cannot give life (Hebrews 7:19). But our High Priest's inherent "power," now in heaven, has in Him "life for ever"; Hebrews 9:14, "through the eternal Spirit"; Hebrews 7:25, "able . . . ever liveth" (John 5:26). It is in the power of His resurrection life, not of His earthly life, that Christ officiates as a Priest.
