30 For we know Him who said, ^a“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,”¹ says the Lord. And again, ^b“The Lord will judge His people.”

31 ^aIt is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But ^arecall the former days in which, after you were¹ illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings:

33 partly while you were made ^aa spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while ^byou became companions of those who were so treated;

34 for you had compassion on¹ me ^ain my chains, and ^bjoyfully accepted the plundering of your² goods, knowing that ^cyou have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves³ in heaven.

35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, ^awhich has great reward.

36 ^aFor you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, ^byou may receive the promise:

37 “For ^ayet a little while,
And ^bHe who is coming will come and will not² tarry.

38 Now ^athe just shall live by faith;
But if anyone draws back,
My soul has no pleasure in him.”

39 But we are not of those ^awho draw back to perdition, but of those who ^bbelieve to the saving of the soul.

But call to remembrance - It appears from this, and indeed from some parts of the Gospel history, that the first believers in Judea were greatly persecuted; our Lord' s crucifixion, Stephen' s martyrdom, the persecution that arose after the death of Stephen, Acts 8:1, Herod' s persecution, Acts 12:1, in which James was killed, and the various persecutions of St. Paul, sufficiently show that this disposition was predominant among that bad people.

A great fight of afflictions - · A great combat or contention of sufferings. Here we have an allusion to the combats at the Grecian games, or to exhibitions of gladiators at the public spectacles; and an intimation how honorable it was to contend for the faith once delivered to the saints, and to overcome through the blood of the Lamb, and their own testimony.
