Hebrews 12:15

Looking carefully (episkopountev). Present active participle of episkopew, to have oversight, in N.T. only here and I Peter 5:2. Cf. episcopov (bishop).

Lest there be any man (mh tiv). Negative purpose clause with ei (present active subjunctive) omitted.

Falleth short of (usterwn apo). Present active participle of usterew (see Hebrews 4:1) agreeing with tiv. Followed here by apo and the ablative.

Root of bitterness. (riza pikriav). Quoted from Deuteronomy 29:18. Vivid picture.

Springing up (anw fuousa). Present active participle of fuw, to sprout. Pictured here as a quick process. Also from Deuteronomy 29:18.

Trouble (enoxlh). Present active subjunctive (in final clause with mh tiv) of enoxlew, old verb to trouble with a crowd, to annoy. In N.T. only here and Luke 6:18.

Be defiled (mianqwsin). First aorist passive subjunctive (in final clause with mh) of mianw, old verb to dye, to stain, to defile as in Titus 1:15 (the conscience). The contagion of sin is terrible as any disease.
