Hebrews 12:19
Compare all
17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was arejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

The Glorious Company

18 For you have not come1 to athe mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and2 darkness and tempest,
19 and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so that those who heard it abegged that the word should not be spoken to them anymore.
20 (For they could not endure what was commanded: a“And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned1 or shot with an arrow.”
21 And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, a“I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”)
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels,
23 to the1 general assembly and church of athe firstborn bwho are registered in heaven, to God cthe Judge of all, to the spirits of just men dmade perfect,
24 to Jesus athe Mediator of the new covenant, and to bthe blood of sprinkling that speaks better things cthan that of Abel.

Hear the Heavenly Voice

25 See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For aif they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven,
26 whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, a“Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven.”

Hebrews 12:19

Unto blackness (gnofw). Dative case of gnofov (late form for earlier dnofov and kin to nefov, cloud), here only in N.T. Quoted here from Exodus 10:22.

Darkness (zofw). Old word, in Homer for the gloom of the world below. In the Symmachus Version of Exodus 10:22, also in Judges 1:6; II Peter 2:4, II Peter 2:15.

Tempest (quellh). Old word from quw (to boil, to rage), a hurricane, here only in N.T. From Exodus 10:22.

The sound of a trumpet (salpiggov hxw). From Exodus 19:16. Exov is an old word (our exo) as in Luke 21:25; Acts 2:2.

The voice of words (fwnh rhmatwn). From Exodus 19:19; Deuteronomy 4:12.

Which voice (hv). Relative referring to fwnh (voice) just before, genitive case with akousantev (heard, aorist active participle).

Intreated (parhthsanto). First aorist middle (indirect) indicative of paraiteomai, old verb, to ask from alongside (Mark 15:6), then to beg away from oneself, to depreciate as here, to decline (Acts 25:11), to excuse (Luke 14:18), to avoid (I Timothy 4:7).

That no word should be spoken unto them (prosteqhnai autoiv logon). First aorist passive infinitive of prostiqhmi, old word to add, here with accusative of general reference (logon), "that no word be added unto them." Some MSS. have here a redundant negative mh with the infinitive because of the negative idea in parhthsanto as in Galatians 5:7.
