James 3:13-18
Excerpted from: Satan (Part 5)God says this is not from above. It is demonic. He is indicating here that envy, vanity, and selfish ambition will always eventually produce confusion, disorder, disharmony, instability, and evil things. All of this is gotten out of that five verse section, from James 3:13-18—that it is good for nothing in terms of producing a fruit of righteousness. Rather, what it does is destroy spiritual life. Again, a reminder that Satan is undergirding this and it is being spewed forth from his mind.
All of these character traits produce peace because God, not Satan, is at work in them. They are characteristics of His personality. Those who strive for peace are those who are going to produce a crop of righteousness.
We understand that in the physical realm a certain kind of environment is necessary for the production of a good crop. If we put something in a field and if the environment is not right, then the crop is not going to produce what it should or what it could. God is telling us that what He is after in us—the crop of righteousness, the fruits of His Spirit—also requires a right environment, and that right environment is peace. He is not saying that some righteousness cannot be produced in other environments. He is saying the most and best will come out of an environment in which there is peace.

And if there is no peace, well, it is pretty much impossible to grow fruit because the environment is full of iniquity. Because it is that iniquity that makes the environment where you have no peace. So God has to make sure that His people have an environment of peace for them to grow. And you know we have something to contribute to that. We contribute to that by repenting of our sins and following the truth. And then He takes care of the rest. And in that situation, in that environment, we can begin to grow.

Excerpted from: Rejoice and Fear GodWhat he is saying in effect is that in order for the right fruits, that is, the fruits of righteousness which would be the fruits of God's Spirit, to be produced, there has to be peace. That does not mean that we cannot produce those fruits in this time, but there has to be peace first of all between us and God or those fruits of righteousness will never be produced. The more peace there is in our life, the more of the fruit of God's Spirit that are going to be produced. So if there is peace with other people, then one can concentrate on producing the fruits of righteousness

When you combine this with Hebrews 13:20, the apostle asserts that though God gives peace, the Christian must at the same time be actively making peace. It cannot just stop with trying to be a good person. You have to be actively making peace. It is the righteous response to being given God's peace to make peace in our lives.

Asking God for peace is a valid request to make of Him. I think it is highly likely He is going to make us go through the process of learning how to make peace, and it might be very painful because it requires a great deal of humbling of the self.

And so our appeal to God, in prayer, is that He will permit the state (the civil government) to create order—so that we can preach the gospel, and men can be saved. We need peace to do the work of God. So, the least that we can do is to be subject to their rule.
