Deceptions of the Last Hour

18 aLittle children, bit is the last hour; and as you have heard that cthe Antichrist is coming, deven now many antichrists have come, by which we know ethat it is the last hour.  
19 aThey went out from us, but they were not of us; for bif they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out cthat they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.  
20 But ayou have an anointing bfrom the Holy One, and cyou know all things.  
21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
22 aWho is a liar but he who denies that bJesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.  
23 aWhoever denies the Son does not have the bFather either; che who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.  

Let Truth Abide in You

24 Therefore let that abide in you awhich you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, byou also will abide in the Son and in the Father.

1 John 2:20

Anointing (xrisma). Old word for result (mat) and for the material, from xriw, to anoint, perhaps suggested by the use of antixristoi in verse I John 2:18. Christians are "anointed ones," xristoi in this sense, with which compare Psalms 105:15: "Touch not my anointed ones" (mh ayhsqe twn xristwn mou). These antichrists posed as the equals of or even superior to Christ himself. But followers of Christ do have "the oil of anointing" (to elaion tou xrismatov, Exodus 29:7), the Holy Spirit. This word in the N.T. only here and verse I John 2:27. Later the term was applied to baptism after baptismal remission came to be taught (Tertullian, etc.).

From the Holy One (apo tou agiou). They receive this anointing of the Holy Spirit from the Anointed One, Jesus Christ (the Holy One). Cf. John 6:69; Acts 3:14.

And ye know all things (kai oidate panta). But the best MSS. read pantev rather than panta, "Ye all know it." This anointing is open to all Christians, not just a select few.
