The Outworking of Love

16 aBy this we know love, bbecause He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17 But awhoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
18 My little children, alet us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
19 And by this we1 know athat we are of the truth, and shall2 assure our hearts before Him.
20 aFor if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, awe have confidence toward God.
22 And awhatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments band do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

1 John 3:18

When the venerable John could no longer walk to the meetings of the Church but was borne thither by his disciples, he always uttered the same address to the Church; he reminded them of that one commandment which he had received from Christ Himself, as comprising all the rest, and forming the distinction of the new covenant, "My little children, love one another." When the brethren present, wearied of hearing the same thing so often, asked why he always repeated the same thing, he replied, "Because it is the commandment of the Lord, and if this one thing be attained, it is enough" [JEROME].

in word—Greek, "with word . . . with tongue, but in deed and truth."
