1 John 5:9
Compare all
7 For there are three that bear witness1 in heaven: the Father, athe Word, and the Holy Spirit; band these three are one.
8 And there are three that bear witness on earth: athe Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
9 If we receive athe witness of men, the witness of God is greater; bfor this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son.
10 He who believes in the Son of God ahas the witness in himself; he who does not believe God bhas made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.
11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

1 John 5:9

If we receive (ei lambanomen). Condition of first class with ei and the present active indicative, assumed as true. The conditions for a legally valid witness are laid down in Deuteronomy 19:15 (cf. Matthew 18:16; John 8:17 f.; John 10:25; II Corinthians 13:1).

Greater (meizwn). Comparative of megav, because God is always true.

For (oti). So it applies to this case.

That (oti). Thus taken in the declarative sense (the fact that) as in John 3:19, though it can be causal (because) or indefinite relative with memarturhken (what he hath testified, perfect active indicative of marturew, as in John 1:32; John 4:44, etc.), a harsh construction here because of marturia, though some MSS. do read en to agree with it (cf. verse I John 5:10). See oti ean in I John 3:20 for that idiom. Westcott notes the Trinity in verses I John 5:6-9: the Son comes, the Spirit witnesses, the Father has witnessed.
