The Throne Room of Heaven

1 After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing aopen in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a btrumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.”
2 Immediately aI was in the Spirit; and behold, ba throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.
3 1And He who sat there was alike a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; band there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald.
4 aAround the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, bclothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads.
5 And from the throne proceeded alightnings, thunderings, and voices. bSeven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are cthe seven Spirits of God.
6 Before the throne there1 was aa sea of glass, like crystal. bAnd in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back.
7 aThe first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle.
8 The four living creatures, each having asix wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:
b“Holy,1 holy, holy,
cLord God Almighty,
dWho was and is and is to come!”
9 Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, awho lives forever and ever,
10 athe twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:
11 “Youa are worthy, O Lord,
To receive glory and honor and power;
bFor You created all things,
And by cYour will they exist and were created.”

Revelation 4:1

After these things (meta tauta). Change in the panorama, not chronology (Revelation 7:1, Revelation 7:9; Revelation 15:5; Revelation 18:1; Revelation 19:1). This vision is of heaven, not of earth as was true of chapters Rev. 1, 2. The first vision of Christ and the messages to the seven churches began in Revelation 1:12 f. This new vision of the throne in heaven (Revelation 4:1-11) succeeds that to which it here alludes.

I saw (eidon). Second aorist active indicative of oraw.

Behold (idou). Exclamation of vivid emotion as John looked. No effect on the structure and nominative case qura (door) follows it.

Opened (hnewgmenh). Perfect (triple reduplication) passive participle of anoigw as in Revelation 3:8 (door of opportunity) and Revelation 3:20 (door of the heart), here the door of revelation (Swete).

In heaven (en tw ouranw). As in Ezekiel 1:1; Mark 1:10; John 1:51. In Revelation always in singular except Revelation 12:12.

The first (h prwth). Reference is to Revelation 1:10.

Speaking (laloushv). From lalew, rather legoushv of Revelation 1:10 from legw, both agreeing with salpiggov (trumpet).

Saying (legwn). Present active participle of legw repeating the idea of laloushv, but in the nominative masculine singular construed with fwnh (feminine singular), construction according to sense because of the person behind the voice as in Revelation 11:15; Revelation 19:14.

Come up (anaba). Short Koin‚ form for anabhqi (second aorist active imperative second person singular of anabainw).

Hither (wde). Originally "here," but vernacular use (John 6:25; John 10:27).

I will show (deicw). Future active of deiknumi in same sense in Revelation 1:1.

Hereafter (meta tauta). Some editors (Westcott and Hort) connect these words with the beginning of verse Revelation 4:2.
