Revelation 9:4 - People's Commentary (NT)

Revelation 9:4

2 And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the ^asun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit.

3 Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, ^aas the scorpions of the earth have power.

4 They were commanded ^anot to harm ^bthe grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have ^cthe seal of God on their foreheads.

5 And¹ they were not given authority to kill them, ^abut to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man.

6 In those days ^amen will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.

Revelation 9:4

Revelation 9:3 There came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth. The destroying locusts symbolize destroying armies. See Nahum 3:15 Ex 10:12. Observe that they come out of the smoke. To the smoke their origin is due. Unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. Power to hurt is implied, since they are compared to scorpions.
