Leviticus 16:31

29 “This shall be a statute forever for you: ^aIn the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall¹ afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who² dwells among you.

30 For on that day the priest shall make¹ atonement for you, to ^acleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord.

31 ^aIt is a sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever.

32 ^aAnd the priest, who is anointed and ^bconsecrated to minister as priest in his father’s place, shall make atonement, and put on the linen clothes, the holy garments;

33 then he shall make atonement for² the Holy Sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tabernacle of meeting and for the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly.

34 ^aThis shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel, for all their sins, ^bonce a year.” And he did as the Lord commanded Moses.

LEVITICUS. So called from its treating of the laws relating to the ritual, the services, and sacrifices of the Jewish religion, the superintendence of which was entrusted to the Levitical priesthood. It is chiefly, however, the duties of the priests, "the sons of Aaron," which this book describes; and its claim to be the work of Moses is established by the following passages:— II Chronicles 30:16; Nehemiah 8:14; Jeremiah 7:22-23; Ezekiel 20:11 Matthew 8:4; Luke 2:22; John 8:5; Romans 10:4; Romans 13:9; II Corinthians 6:16; Galatians 3:12; I Peter 1:16.
