Is that not interesting? He is talking about the high priest, the position being passed down from father to son. But, in the spiritual application, who is the High Priest? And who is the Father? Just think about it. It is very interesting in the analogy.

Now, in this chapter alone, if we were to go back, and I have actually done this in my Bible, I have marked all the times where it said, "make atonement" in this one chapter. It is the number of completion (3) times the number of grace (5)—15 times that the phrase "make atonement" appears in this one chapter. It should tell you something. God does not use numbers indiscriminately. And, in this one chapter alone—just look in the last three verses we just read at how many times "make atonement" appears. And this is all the work of the High Priest. He is constantly making atonement here on this day.

And notice the things that He makes atonement for. Everything from the Holy of Holies itself, to the tabernacle (the holy place), the altar, the priesthood themselves, and all the people for all their sins this one time, The Day of Atonement. He does this every year.

Everything that comes in contact with humanity is contaminated, including the holy of holies. And that is why he had to make atonement for it, because sinful men had interaction with it, even if it was just himself, the high priest. He had to make atonement for everything, and consecrate it once again to the service of God because it had been defiled. It just shows you how bad things really are. Everything needed to be cleaned again.

So, everything that sin had touched had to be atoned for on this Day of Atonement, even the Holy of Holies. And this had to happen every year, because people continued to sin. They never stopped.

What I wanted to show you, by going through that passage again, is that the atonement is not confined just to our sins. The general principle here is that by the time everything is said and done, Christ the High Priest will have made atonement for everything—all of it. All the effects of sin, all the things that separate, all the things that cause destruction will eventually be covered. Christ’s work will continue on until everything is holy. That is what He is getting at.

By the time we get to Revelation 21 and 22, the New Jerusalem comes down and everything is dedicated to the Lord. You get to the end of Zechariah 14, even the pots will be holiness to the Lord. That is what we are talking about here in the general principle—when God and Christ decided that they would atone for the sins of this world and for all the bad things that happened in this world, they decided not to do just a little bit; they went all the way and decided that they will atone for everything.

Here we have it, just in the context of Israel. But it was not the Israelites’ sins, it was also the tabernacle of meeting. He made atonement for the altar. He made atonement for the priests. He covers everything. He leaves nothing uncovered as it were, that when God does a thing He does it completely.

This is a lesson for all of the ages. It is God's judgment that all must be reconciled to God through the blood. That is why I began all the way back there in verse 27 so that we would bring in the mention of blood. Anciently, through this ritual, the whole community was symbolically reconciled to God once a year.

Now what happened, (I cannot think of what the word might be, at least symbolically) is that all through the year the sins of the people were transferred to the Temple and to the altar. And then once a year the Temple, and then the altar on the Day of Atonement, was purged of those sins, and the people were free once again. All of this is done because it is God's judgment that we need to understand, that atonement comes only through blood through death.

This is the day that God designates for the cleansing from all sins. For Israel, it included a cleansing of the tabernacle furniture, as well as an atonement for the priesthood. But, as it says in verse 34, the purpose is to make atonement for sins, once a year. For us, the application is different, because we have faith in Christ’s single, perfect sacrifice. It is still, though, a solemn memorial of the propitiation and expiation of our sins, performed by our Savior. He was completely innocent, and yet He both paid the penalty and also removes the sins completely from view, so even our conscience is cleansed.
