Excerpted from: The Holiness CodeIt is very important. This is the theme really of the whole Bible. We have been sanctified by God, and because He is holy, and because He is making man into His image, we must be holy like Him.
Now God uses a shorthand form of this throughout the holiness code. He does not say, "You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy." He simply says, "I am the Lord." If you go through chapter 19, it says, "I am the LORD your God." And then He will give another way, and at the end He will say, "I am the LORD your God." Then He will give another one, and say, "I am the LORD." He will go on and on like this, and what He is doing is restating His theme in a shorthand way. "You shall do this. To remind you, I am God, and this, as being God, is the way I act, and because you are My people and I have made you holy, this is how you will act." And He reminds them: "I am God."
He not only reminds them of the way they should be, but He has the definite power to make and enforce these laws. So every time you see this 'I am the Lord' running through this section, He is repeating in shorthand form chapter 19 verse 2, "You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy." It is a reminder. "I am the LORD, and I am holy. Because I am the LORD, this is the way you should act."

Excerpted from: Sanctification and the TeensWhen they translated the word "fear" there, they softened it somewhat. But if you look in the margin, as my Bible points you to the margin, it says, "You shall revere your parents." That's a stronger word. It is a word that is normally reserved for God. We revere God, but God gives direction here to us to revere our parents. Parents have an awesomely high calling, and that calling is to be respected by the children, because that reverence that God expects precedes the reverence God expects to come to Him when that relationship with God is introduced. That reverence for parents is to get us ready to reverence God.
