According to the letter of the law, adultery is sexual intercourse outside of marriage, but Christ emphasizes the spirit of the law. If a man even looks at a woman to lust after her, he has committed adultery. This sin so defiles the land and its inhabitants that it must be removed. Thus, the law's penalty for adultery is death.

This sin so defiles the land and its inhabitants that it must be removed, and the penalty prescribed is death. Israel was ordered to stone such sinners. The Jews, appealing to this clear requirement, thought they had cornered Jesus in a no-win situation. If He disregarded the law, He would undermine His credibility by appearing lawless, and He could then be charged in the courts as an anarchist. They believed He would be forced to commit one way or the other, seeing it as an open-and-shut, winning case.
