Compare all
7 aHe shall not make himself unclean even for his father or his mother, for his brother or his sister, when they die, because his separation to God is on his head.
8 aAll the days of his separation he shall be holy to the Lord.
9 ‘And if anyone dies very suddenly beside him, and he defiles his consecrated head, then he shall ashave his head on the day of his cleansing; on the seventh day he shall shave it.
10 Then aon the eighth day he shall bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of meeting;
11 and the priest shall offer one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, and make atonement for him, because he sinned in regard to the corpse; and he shall sanctify his head that same day.
12 He shall consecrate to the Lord the days of his separation, and bring a male lamb in its first year aas a trespass offering; but the former days shall be1 lost, because his separation was defiled.

Numbers 6:9-12

And so, to touch a dead body was to repudiate the entire vow. It was as if it was saying, "I love death. I love sin. I am willing to fellowship with these things rather than keeping myself pure and undefiled." So, this one symbolizes purity, life, dedication, and union with God.

Do you know what this means? Do you know what he had to do? He had to start over at the beginning. If he had dedicated his life to God for one year, and he touched a dead body on day 364, he had to go back and do another entire year! And, look at the cost! He had to give a sin offering, and burnt offering which includes the grain offering; and then he had to give the trespass offering too. He had to give four offerings just for inadvertently touching a dead body—even if it was not his fault. But, God said that he was responsible. And so, he had to give these offerings, shave his head, and start over.

Numbers 6:8-12

It said that if the Nazarite is defiled, he must shave his head and start all over again. All the former time of his service was considered lost. He had to begin again as if nothing had happened before. Even though what happened in the life of Samson up to this point while in service to the Philistines did not quite fulfill the ritual of Numbers 6, Samson was to have a new but short-lived life as a judge who would begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines.
