4 Why should the name of our father be ^aremoved from among his family because he had no son? ^bGive us a possession among our father’s brothers.”

5 So Moses ^abrought their case before the Lord.

6 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

7 “The daughters of Zelophehad speak what is right; ^ayou shall surely give them a possession of inheritance among their father’s brothers, and cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them.

8 And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter.

Numbers

NUMBERS. This book is so called because it contains an account of the enumeration and arrangement of the Israelites. The early part of it, from the first through the tenth chapters, appears to be a supplement to Leviticus, being occupied with relating the appointment of the Levites to the sacred offices. The journal of the march through the wilderness is then given as far as Numbers 21:20; after which the early incidents of the invasion are narrated. One direct quotation only from this book (Numbers 16:5) is made in the New Testament (II Timothy 2:19); but indirect references to it by the later sacred writers are very numerous.
