Excerpted from: IshmaelNow another place it was translated mocking. Some say that he was laughing at Isaac in a derogatory way making fun of his name, which means “laughter.” And what this did was create a conflict, and Hagar and Ishmael got sent away. This is the sort of thing that has been happening ever since between Isaac's children and Ishmael's children.
