11 King David also ^adedicated these to the Lord, along with the silver and gold that he had dedicated from all the nations which he had subdued—

12 from¹ Syria, from Moab, from the people of Ammon, from the ^aPhilistines, from Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

13 And David made himself a ^aname when he returned from killing ^beighteen thousand Syrians in ^cthe Valley of Salt.

14 He also put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, and ^aall the Edomites became David’s servants. And the Lord preserved David wherever he went.

15 So David reigned over all Israel; and David administered judgment and justice to all his people.

16 ^aJoab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; ^bJehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;

The Syrians - Read the Edomites, as in marginal references (compare Psalms 60:1-12 title), and as the context II Samuel 8:14 requires. For a further account of this war of extermination with Edom, see I Kings 11:15-16. The war with Edom was of some duration, not without serious reverses and dangers to the Israelites (II Samuel 8:2 note). The different accounts probably relate to different parts of the campaign.
