Compare all
25 So King Solomon sent by the hand of aBenaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he struck him down, and he died.

Abiathar Exiled, Joab Executed

26 And to Abiathar the priest the king said, “Go to aAnathoth, to your own fields, for1 you are deserving of death; but I will not put you to death at this time, bbecause you carried the ark of the Lord God before my father David, and because you were afflicted every time my father was afflicted.”
27 So Solomon removed Abiathar from being priest to the Lord, that he might afulfill the word of the Lord which He spoke concerning the house of Eli at Shiloh.
28 Then news came to Joab, for Joab ahad defected to Adonijah, though he had not defected to Absalom. So Joab fled to the tabernacle of the Lord, and btook hold of the horns of the altar.
29 And King Solomon was told, “Joab has fled to the tabernacle of the Lord; there he is, by the altar.” Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, “Go, astrike him down.”

1 Kings 2:27

That he might fulfil the word of the L RD - We need not understand this as stating that the fulfillment of the old prophecy was Solomon' s motive, or even one of his motives. The reference is to the overruling providence of God, which thus brought about the fulfillment of the prophecy. (Compare Matthew 1:22; Matthew 2:15; Matthew 27:35, etc.) The deposition of Abiathar involved the rejection of the house of Ithamar I Chronicles 24:3, to which Eli belonged, and the reestablishment of the high priesthood in the line of Eleazar.
