8 The poles ^aextended so that the ends of the poles could be seen from the holy place, in front of the inner sanctuary; but they could not be seen from outside. And they are there to this day.

9 ^aNothing was in the ark ^bexcept the two tablets of stone which Moses ^cput there at Horeb, ^dwhen the Lord made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.

10 And it came to pass, when the priests came out of the holy place, that the cloud ^afilled the house of the Lord,

11 so that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the ^aglory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.

12 ^aThen Solomon spoke:
“The Lord said He would dwell ^bin the dark cloud.

13 ^aI have surely built You an exalted house,
^bAnd a place for You to dwell in forever.”

14 Then the king turned around and ^ablessed the whole assembly of Israel, while all the assembly of Israel was standing.

15 And he said: ^a“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who ^bspoke with His mouth to my father David, and with His hand has fulfilled it, saying,

The cloud - the visible symbol of the divine presence - the Shechinah of the Targums - which halt been promised before the ark was begun Exodus 29:43, and had filled the tabernacle as soon as it was completed Exodus 40:34, and which had probably been seen from time to time during the long interval when we have no express mention of it, now once more appeared in full magnificence, and took, as it were, possession of the building which Solomon was dedicating. The presence of God in the temple henceforth was thus assured to the Jews, and His approval of all that Solomon had done was signified.
