22:1 Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called Passover, was approaching; |
22:2 And the chief priests and the scribes were speculating as to how they might put Him to death, for they feared the people. |
22:3 Then Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. |
22:4 And he went away, and spoke with the chief priests and the captains about a way by which he might betray Him to them. |
22:5 And they rejoiced, and agreed to give him money. |
22:6 And he promised, and sought an opportunity to betray Him to them away from the multitude. |
22:7 Then came the day of the unleaveneds () in which it was obligatory to kill the Passover lambs. |
22:8 And He sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us that we may eat." |
22:9 But they said to Him, "Where do You desire that we prepare it?" |
22:10 And He said to them, "Watch, and when you come into the city, you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters; |
22:11 And you shall say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest chamber, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?" ' |
22:12 And he shall show you a large upper room furnished; there prepare." |
22:13 Then they went and found everything exactly as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover. |
22:14 Now when the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. |
22:15 And He said to them, "With earnest desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. |
22:16 For I tell you that I will not eat of it again until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God." |
22:17 And He took a cup; and after giving thanks, He said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves. |
22:18 For I say to you, I will not drink at all of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God has come." |
22:19 And He took bread; and after giving thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body, which is given for you. This do in the remembrance of Me." |
22:20 In like manner also, He took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you. |
22:21 Behold, even now the hand of him who is betraying Me is with Me at the table; |
22:22 And the Son of man indeed goes, according as it has been appointed, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!" |
22:23 Then they began to question this among themselves, which of them it might be who was about to do this. |
22:24 And there was also an argument among them, even this: which of them should be considered the greatest. |
22:25 And He said to them, "The kings of the nations lord over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors. |
22:26 But it shall not be this way among you; rather, let the one who is greatest among you be as the younger, and the one who is leading as the one who is serving. |
22:27 For who is greater, the one who is sitting at the table, or the one who is serving? Is not the one who sits at the table? But I am among you as One Who is serving. |
22:28 Now you are the ones who have continued with Me in My temptations. |
22:29 And I appoint to you, as My Father has appointed to Me, a kingdom; |
22:30 So that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and may sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel." |
22:31 Then the Lord said, "Simon, Simon, listen well. Satan has demanded to have all of you, to sift as wheat. |
22:32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and when you are converted, strengthen your brethren." |
22:33 And he said to Him, "Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death." |
22:34 But He said, "I tell you, Peter, the cock shall in no wise crow today before you have denied knowing Me three times." |
22:35 And He said to them, "When I sent you without purse and provision bag and sandals, did you lack anything?" And they said, "Nothing." |
22:36 Then He said to them, "Now, however, let the one who has a purse take it, and likewise his provision bag; and let the one who does not have a sword sell his garment and buy one. |
22:37 For I say to you, that which has been written must yet be accomplished in Me: 'And He was reckoned with the lawless'; for the things concerning Me have a fulfillment." |
22:38 And they said, "Lord, see, here are two swords." And He said to them, "It is enough." |
22:39 Then He left the house and went, as He was accustomed, to the Mount of Olives; and His disciples also followed Him. |
22:40 And when He arrived at the place, He said to them, "Pray that you do not enter into temptation." |
22:41 And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw; and falling to His knees, He prayed, |
22:42 Saying, "Father, if You are willing to take away this cup from Me—; nevertheless, not My will, but Your will be done." |
22:43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. |
22:44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. And His sweat became as great drops of blood falling down to the ground. |
22:45 And after rising up from prayer, He came to His disciples and found them sleeping for grief. |
22:46 Then He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Arise and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation." |
22:47 And while He was still speaking, a crowd suddenly appeared, with the one who was called Judas, one of the twelve, going in front of them; and he came near to Jesus to kiss Him. |
22:48 But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of man with a kiss?" |
22:49 And when those who were with Him saw what was about to happen, they said to Him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" |
22:50 Then a certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. |
22:51 But Jesus answered and said, "That is enough!" Then He touched his ear and healed him. |
22:52 And Jesus said to those who had come out against Him, the chief priests and captains of the temple and elders, "Have you come out, as against a thief, with swords and clubs? |
22:53 When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not stretch out your hands against Me; but this is your hour, and the power of darkness." |
22:54 And after arresting Him, they led Him away and brought Him into the house of the high priest. Now Peter was following at a distance. |
22:55 And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the court, and had sat down together, Peter sat among them. |
22:56 And a certain maid saw him sitting by the light; and after looking at him intently, she said, "Now this one was with Him." |
22:57 But he denied Him, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him." |
22:58 And after a little while, another saw him and said, "You also are one of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not." |
22:59 Now after about an hour had passed, a certain other man strongly affirmed, saying, "In truth, this one also was with Him, for he is indeed a Galilean." |
22:60 And Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about." And immediately, while he was yet speaking, the cock crowed. |
22:61 Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the cock crows, you shall deny Me three times." |
22:62 And Peter went outside and wept bitterly. |
22:63 Then the men who were holding Jesus mocked Him and beat Him. |
22:64 And after covering His head, they repeatedly struck His face and asked Him, saying, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck You?" |
22:65 And many other things they blasphemously said against Him. |
22:66 Now as soon as it was day, the elders of the people assembled together, with both the chief priests and the scribes, and they led Him into their Sanhedrin, saying, |
22:67 "If You are the Christ, tell us." And He said to them, "If I should tell you, you would not believe Me at all; |
22:68 And if I should also ask you, you would not answer Me at all, nor let Me go. |
22:69 Hereafter shall the Son of man be sitting at the right hand of the power of God." |
22:70 And they all said, "Then You are the Son of God?" And He said to them, "I am that One, as you say." |
22:71 Then they said, "What need do we have of any other witness? For we ourselves have heard from His own mouth." |
