Proverbs 3:27
Compare all
25 aDo not be afraid of sudden terror,
Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;
26 For the Lord will be your confidence,
And will keep your foot from being caught.
27 aDo not withhold good from1 those to whom it is due,
When it is in the power of your hand to do so.
28 aDo not say to your neighbor,
“Go, and come back,
And tomorrow I will give it,”
When you have it with you.
29 Do not devise evil against your neighbor,
For he dwells by you for safety’s sake.
30 aDo not strive with a man without cause,
If he has done you no harm.

What Does Proverbs 3:27 Mean?

An opportunity to do good carries with it the obligation to act, as Puritan preacher Cotton Mather observed: "The opportunity to do good imposes the obligation to do it." Such an opportunity is a favor bestowed. Doing good should not be reserved only for moments of convenience or occasions that bring personal fame, but should be carried out whenever the chance arises, regardless of how frequently it comes or how much self-denial it demands.

Proverbs 3:27-28

Cotton Mather, a Puritan preacher, once said, "The opportunity to do good imposes the obligation to do it." He is implying that we have been favored when an opportunity to serve in this manner arises. We are not to do it only when it is convenient or when it will contribute to our fame, but we should do it when we have opportunity, no matter how often it occurs or how much self-denial it takes.
