Bitter Waters Made Sweet

22 So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness of aShur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no bwater.
23 Now when they came to aMarah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called1 Marah.
24 And the people acomplained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”
25 So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. aWhen he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He bmade a statute and an ordinance for them, and there cHe tested them,
26 and said, a“If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the bdiseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord cwho heals you.”

Exodus 15:22-25

Exodus 15:22-25 follows the Song of Miriam. They are dancing on the seashore. They see the Egyptians dead. They are making up songs. They are shouting, "Hallelujahs!"

It is getting worse! That had had been a week before. God does this astounding miracle at the Red Sea and that only impresses them for about 3 days.

He tested their attitude. He tested their response. And despite their grumbling again, saying, "Oh no! We're going to die!" He gave them what they wanted. And He called this a test. They complained to high heaven. But, He was faithful to that covenant; faithful to His promise that He would bring them through the wilderness and into the Promised Land despite them. He performed another astounding miracle by throwing a tree into the water.

But, it had only taken three days this time for them to totally lose sight of God and all that He had done for them, and all that He had promised that He would do for them.

Exodus 15:22-26

That is a very clear promise of healing and of protection from those diseases. But notice the conditional "if . . . then" construction of this promise. We have to heed Him, it says—meaning listen and obey Him. And we have to do what is right—meaning we have to live righteously.
