Exodus 32:28

He also here in verse 9 talks about Levi not remembering his father or his mother or acknowledging his brothers. This is a reference to what happened in Exodus 32:28 after the Golden Calf incident. Moses says, "Who is on the Lord's side?" and all the people of Levi came over to him and they began to kill other Israelites, those who were sinning, and they killed 3,000 that day. This is basically what he is saying. That they are going to be a part of God's arm, if you will, and they cannot worry about father, mother, sister, brother. They have to do the will of God no matter what it is. And it is a good lesson for us too, because Jesus says the same thing about what we have to do to be one of His disciples.

So, the Levite, Moses says at this point, the Levitical nature is going to be used in God's service. It is blind to family ties within Israel, not anchored in land, but in God's blessing. The Levites were going to do God's will no matter what it is, even if it comes to going against their own brethren. So now they will teach, this is what it says in verses 10 and 11, and offer sacrifices and make God's will known to Israel. That is the role that God defined for the people of Levi within the tribes of Israel.

Again, this was right after the Golden Calf incident and Moses asked, "Who is on the Lord's side? Let him come to me." Is it not amazing that only one tribe jumped up? There is no mention of anyone else. Then all the sons of Levi came to Moses, and he sent them to do the Lord's bidding to uphold His law. And what did God do for the sons of Levi? He bestowed a blessing on them for they did not regard son or brother in upholding the truth of God. God's law was first priority, and God blessed them for it. Sin had entered the camp and it had to be eliminated. Unfortunately, this was not the only time that the Israelites would grieve the Holy Spirit.

Now Aaron, who should have been the one who stood in the gap, and who should have been a wall so that calf was never built, fell short that time in Moses' absence, and so Moses called on anybody—volunteers—to stand in the gap and do the dirty work in the face of this sin. This is one of the Levites' finer moments. They rose to the occasion, and they did the dirty work. This is what I mean about standing sometimes in the gap, that it is hard, and requires sacrifice. I don't think it was easy for them to execute their fellow Israelites, but executioners they were, and it was dirty work.
