John 5:3

In these (en tautaiv). In these five porches.

Lay (katekeito). Imperfect middle of katakeimai, to lie down, singular number because plhqov (multitude) is a collective substantive.

Withered (chrwn). Old adjective chrov for dry, wasted as the hand (Matthew 12:10). The oldest and best manuscripts omit what the Textus Receptus adds here "waiting for the moving of the water" (ekdexomenon thn tou udatov kinhsin), a Western and Syrian addition to throw light on the word taraxqh (is troubled) in verse John 5:7.
