Blessing and Conflict at Antioch

42 1So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath.  
43 Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, apersuaded them to continue in bthe grace of God.  
44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God.
45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they aopposed the things spoken by Paul.  
46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, a“It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but bsince you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, cwe turn to the Gentiles.  
47 For so the Lord has commanded us:
a‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles,
That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”  
48 Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. aAnd as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.  
49 And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region.
50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, araised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.

What Does Acts 13:44 Mean?



Acts 13:43-47

Consider the import of what Paul says here. He is to be a light to the Gentiles, showing them the way. What day did he appoint to meet with these people? He had a wonderful opportunity at the end of that first Sabbath, which broke up in a dispute, to tell the people: "Now, wait a minute. Yes, I want you to all come back, but why not just do it tomorrow, on Sunday?" Instead, in order to continue in the grace of God, he had them wait a full week. Then, on the Sabbath, they assembled again. Note that this occurs in the general area of Galatia.

Acts 13:42-44

Christ set the Sabbath-keeping example for his apostles, and Paul, following His example, tells us we are to imitate him as he imitates Christ (I Corinthians 11:1). Paul preached to the Jews and Gentiles on the Sabbath because the Sabbath is for everyone, not just the Jews. These Gentiles were keeping the Sabbath in the synagogue with the Jews on the seventh day, not Sunday.
