Romans 8:1

Free from Indwelling Sin

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, ^awho do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

2 For ^athe law of ^bthe Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from ^cthe law of sin and death.

3 For ^awhat the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, ^bGod did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,

4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who ^ado not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

5 For ^athose who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, ^bthe things of the Spirit.

6 For ^ato be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because ^athe carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, ^bnor indeed can be.

8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

11 But if the Spirit of ^aHim who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, ^bHe who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies¹ through His Spirit who dwells in you.

12 ^aTherefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.

13 For ^aif you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you ^bput to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

14 For ^aas many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

What Does Romans 8:1 Mean?

Before growing in Christ, one must understand and believe with the whole heart that one is completely accepted before God. Even after accepting His invitation, repenting, and returning to Him, confidence is needed that He is present, that He loves us, is concerned about us, and desires us to be part of His family and Kingdom. He wants us to grow, and we are accepted before Him. Paul specifically addresses those who have been called and given the privilege and responsibility to walk in truth according to the indwelling of Christ's Holy Spirit—not those sincerely claiming to know Christ yet sincerely wrong. What God has graciously given should not be thrown away. Those called have been set apart, but not so that they can boast.

Romans 8:1

Before we can go on, even though we have accepted God's invitation to us, repented, and have come back to Him, before we can grow in Christ, we have to understand and believe with all of our heart that we are completely accepted before Him. Do we feel He has accepted us?

He wants us to understand that we are accepted. He wants us to have the confidence that He is with us, that He loves us, that He is concerned about us, that He wants us to be part of His family. He wants us to be in His Kingdom. He wants us to grow. We are accepted before Him.
