1 Corinthians 11:17
Compare all
15 But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given1 to her for a covering.
16 But aif anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, bnor do the churches of God.

Conduct at the Lord’s Supper

17 Now in giving these instructions I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse.
18 For first of all, when you come together as a church, aI hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.
19 For athere must also be factions among you, bthat those who are approved may be1 recognized among you.
20 Therefore when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper.

What Does 1 Corinthians 11:17 Mean?

The Corinthian congregation was a troubled group divided into factions by heresies. This circumstance was not helping the already-calamitous situation, but Paul says that the calamity would eventually produce a good result. Paul understands factions as God-ordained because He could see the pattern of them from Old Testament times, as well as the benefits derived from them. The true sons of God would be revealed by their reactions to the false teaching.

1 Corinthians 11:17-19

The phrase "must also be" has the sense of "it being necessary." Paul understands factions as God-ordained because he could see the pattern of them from Old Testament times, as well as the benefits derived from them.

The Corinthian congregation was a troubled group divided into factions by heresies (I Corinthians 1:10-13). This circumstance was not helping the already-calamitous situation, but Paul says that the calamity would eventually produce a good result. The true sons of God would be revealed by their reactions to the false teaching. They would not accept it, and thus would be witnesses to the weaker for the truth of God.
