1 Timothy 1:3
Compare all

Greeting

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope,
2 To Timothy, a atrue son in the faith: bGrace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

No Other Doctrine

3 As I urged you awhen I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some bthat they teach no other doctrine,
4 anor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.
5 Now athe purpose of the commandment is love bfrom a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from1 sincere faith,
6 from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to aidle talk,
7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.

What Does 1 Timothy 1:3 Mean?

1 Timothy 1:3-7

Paul is telling Timothy to command those who are teaching false doctrine to stop the fables and the endless genealogies. They do not edify. The purpose or the goal is to have a pure heart, faith, and a good conscience before God. That is what God wants from us. Paul wants Timothy to expand his horizons'to stop and think of what God wants from him. In verses 6-7, we can see quite a few did not do this.
