1 Timothy 4:1

Expressly (rhtwv). Late adverb, here alone in N.T., from verbal adjective rhtov (from root rew). The reference is to the Holy Spirit, but whether to O.T. prophecy (Acts 1:16) or to some Christian utterance (II Thessalonians 2:2; I Corinthians 14:1 ff.) we do not know. Parry recalls the words of Jesus in Matthew 24:10, Matthew 24:24.

In later times (en usteroiv kairoiv). Old adjective (Matthew 21:31) usually as adverb, usteron (Matthew 4:2). Relative time from the prediction, now coming true (a present danger).

Some shall fall away (aposthsontai tinev). Future middle of afisthmi, intransitive use, shall stand off from, to fall away, apostatize (II Corinthians 12:8).

From the faith (thv pistewv). Ablative case (separation). Not creed, but faith in God through Christ.

Giving heed (prosexontev). Supply ton noun (the mind) as in I Timothy 3:8.

Seducing spirits (pneumasin planoiv). Old adjective (planh, wandering), here active sense (deceiving). As substantive in II Corinthians 6:8. Probably some heathen or the worst of the Gnostics.

Doctrines of devils (didaskaliaiv daimoniwn). "Teachings of daimonv." Definite explanation of the preceding. Cf. I Corinthians 10:20 f.
