1 Timothy 6:9

Desire to be rich (boulomenoi ploutein). The will (boulomai) to be rich at any cost and in haste (Proverbs 28:20). Some MSS. have "trust in riches" in Mark 10:24. Possibly Paul still has teachers and preachers in mind.

Fall into (empiptousin eiv). See on I Timothy 3:6 for en — eiv and I Timothy 3:7 for pagida (snare).

Foolish (anohtouv). See Galatians 3:1, Galatians 3:3.

Hurtful (blaberav). Old adjective from blaptw, to injure, here alone in N.T.

Drown (buqizousin). Late word (literary Koin‚) from buqov (bottom), to drag to the bottom. In N.T. only here and Luke 5:7 (of the boat). Drown in the lusts with the issue "in destruction and perdition" (eiv oleqron kai apwleian). Not annihilation, but eternal punishment. The combination only here, but for oleqrov, see I Thessalonians 5:3; II Thessalonians 1:9; I Corinthians 5:5 and for apwleia, see II Thessalonians 2:3; Philippians 3:19.
